Russian forces have struck the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv just as G7 leaders are scheduled to hold summit in Germany. The move may not be uncounted with possible plea by the group to offer more military support to Kyiv to defend itself against the Russians as well as impose more sanctions on Russia.
The city’s
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that two people were wounded in the strke and
called it an attempt to intimidate Ukraine ahead of international summits this
week.
A BBC correspondent
Nick Beake says firefighters are damping down the nine storey residential
building, where windows have been blasted out and the top floor is partially
collapsed.
He says
authorities say it's too early to say if anyone has been killed.
One of the
several missiles launched by Russia was shot down and landed on a village not
far from Kyiv, the head of the regional military administration Oleksiy Kuleba
said on Telegram, according to the BBC.
It is
believed a woman is trapped in the building hit by Russian missiles.
Firefighters are using crane to try and access the woman.
Police said
a young boy was pulled from the rubble and taken to hospital and are working to
save the mother.
The attack
left several persons injured.
Kyiv's mayor
Vitali Klitschko says "we have a lot of injuries" following the
rocket attack, which struck a residential building around 6:30 in the morning,
local time, according to the BBC.
"We are
doing everything we can to stop the fire and take people out of the destroyed
buildings," he says.
"We
hope nobody has died but the final information we will have in a couple of
hours."
The leaders
of US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan are meeting in Germany in a
bid to forge a common front in confronting Russia’s war of aggression against
Ukraine and show unity and resolve over the war.
