No fewer than four persons were shot dead while several others were injured in a mass shooting incidence in an Indiana mail Sunday.
A man who entered a food court opened fire on shoppers but was taken down by an armed civilian who quickly shot him dead.
The
incidence took place at the Greenwood Park Mall when the suspected shooter
entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines of
ammunition and began firing at civilians in the food court Sunday evening just
south of Indianapolis, The Associated Press quoted Greenwood Police Department
Chief Jim Ison as saying.
An armed civilian killed the suspected shooter, Ison said at a news conference.
Law
enforcement were invited to the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana, just
after 6 p.m. EST to respond to reports of an active shooter who had begun
shooting, prompting shoppers to flee in different directions, according to
Washington Examiner.
Authorities confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, according to Ison
“We are
sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,”
Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said, The Associated Press
reported.
One of the
dead is the suspected shooter, Ison told reporters while three civilians were
killed and two others injured. Witnesses reported hearing 20-30 gunshots during
the attempted massacre.
Greenwood is
an Indianapolis suburb with a population of about 60,000 people.
