US Vice President Kamala Harris has slammed what she calls “extremist” Republican leaders undermining “the freedom to make decisions about our own bodies” following legislations in mostly GOP controlled states to ban abortion.
Some Republican states had so-called trigger laws in place which immediately became laws following the Supreme Court decision to overturn fundamental rights to abortion provided for by the Roe v Wade precedent.
Some people fighting to drag us backward - Harris
Harris who
was making an address to the 113th NAACP national convention said Monday in New
Jersey "we must recognize there are those who are fighting to drag us
backward," Washington Examiner reported.
"Extremist so-called leaders who are
attempting to undermine our democracy and assault our most fundamental
freedoms: the freedom to be safe from gun violence, the freedom to make
decisions about our own bodies, and the freedom to vote."
Harris
implored the NAACP to "continue to build coalitions of Americans of all
ages and races and backgrounds," referring to November midterms.
"No
matter how many times they push us back, we will continue to march
forward," she said. "Freedom, liberty, and democracy are on the
ballot this fall. And we need to make sure that our voices are heard."
Women should made informed choices about their bodies
Harris said
the government should not make decisions about the women’s bodies arguing such
decisions have nothing to do with faith.
"To support a woman's ability, not her government but her, to make that decision does not require anyone to abandon their faith or their beliefs," according to Washington Examiner. "It just requires us to agree the government shouldn't be making that decision for her."
Harris
added, "You know, NAACP, that our country has a history of claiming
ownership over human bodies."
