A Wyoming Senator has said that “there are not enough Democrats” to help Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) win primary elections in the state following her row with Donald Trump.
Sen. John Barrasso
(R-Wyo.) made this known during an interview on “Fox News Sunday”, adding that
Cheney’s outspoken rhetoric against the January 6, 2021, violent attack at the
U.S. Capitol as well as her position as vice chairwoman on the House panel investigating
the riot as potential trouble in the race ahead of the August 16 primary
election, The Hill reports.
“Wyoming
politics is very personal. It’s face to face. It’s town to town,” Barrasso told
host Mike Emanuel, according to The Hill. “The travel that I have done around
the state, I think she has a lot of work to do if she hopes to win the
primary.”
Cheney is
slugging it out with a number of Republican challengers including Trump
endorsed Harriet Hageman, for the Wyoming congressional district. She voted to
impeach former President Donald Trump for his alleged role in orchestrating the
January 6 attack on Congress.
Cheney had
last month began urging Democrats to switch their party affiliation in the
primary elections to help get reelected.
According to
The Hill, On Sunday, Barrasso, who voted against the House panel investigating
the January 6 riot and against impeaching Trump, said that “this wouldn’t be
the first time” Democrats switched over to vote in a GOP primary, adding that
he does not believe there are enough Democrats who might switch sides for
Cheney to win reelection.
“There’s
really not that many Democrats out there,” the senator told Emanuel, The Hill
reported. “Even the chairman of the Democratic Party said there are not enough
Democrats to do that.”
