The funeral for GOP Rep. Jackie Walorski who died in a deadly car crash will be held in Indiana Thursday. 

The congresswoman was travelling in an SUV with two members of her staff on August 3 when it crossed the median of a northern Indiana highway and crashed onto an oncoming vehicle near the town of Wakarusa, The Associated Press quoted the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office as saying.

The funeral would begin at 11 a.m. at Granger Community Church, Palmer Funeral Homes said on its website, according to The Associated Press.

What happened to Congresswoman Walorski?

Walorski, 58, her 27-year-old staffer Zachery Potts, of Mishawaka, who was driving, and her 28-year-old communications director, Emma Thomson, of Washington, D.C. all died in the crash as well as the women who drove the other women involved in the collision, The Associated Press reported.

Walorski’s husband, Dean Swihart said in a statement Wednesday that he was “touched by the support and kindness” the family has received since the lawmaker’s demise.

“Her loss leaves a massive void in our family, our community and in Congress,” Swihart said, according to the outlet. “Our family remains focused solely on celebrating Jackie’s memory and mourning her loss as she returns home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb has announced a special election to fill the remainder of Walorski’s current term which runs through this year on November 8.

When was Walorski first elected lawmaker?

Walorski joined partisan politics in 2004, running and winning an open seat in Indiana’s House of Representatives. In 2010, she ran against Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly but lost narrowly 48%-47%, Washington Examiner reported.

In 2012, Walorski won northwest Indiana House seat as Donnelly moved to the Senate. She was a member of the House Armed Services, Budget, and Veterans Affairs committees, according to the conservative website.

Walorski became the top Republican lawmaker on the House Ethics Committee in January 2021.The Republican Party has scheduled an August 20 caucus meeting to select nominations for Walorski’s replacement.
