A massive fire that threatened life and property consumed boats, buildings and vehicles at a Massachusetts boatyard Friday.

The Associated Press reported that aerial video taken by WCVB-TV showed a large part of the boatyard in Mattapoisett burning with enormous plume of smoke which affected buildings and boats on land. A firefighting vessel battled the fire in a bid to put the flame off on some burning sailboats.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known as well as injuries as the incident is currently under investigation.

Other firefighters arrived from Providence, Rhode Island, about 30 miles away and other nearby areas, according to the Associated Press.

The National Weather Service issued a warning of elevated fire risk Friday in the Mattapoisett area in relation to drought conditions and high winds.

A Mattapoisett resident Richard Walker, 72, was riding his motorcycle when he spotted the cloud of smoke.

“There were flames and billowing black smoke. So much of it,” Walker said, The Associated Press reported. “Thankfully, it looks like a lot of people had their boats out in the harbor. There didn’t seem to be too many in the yard.”
