U.S. House Speaker has promised American solidarity with Taiwan’s democracy even as China prepares for military drills Thursday in retaliation for her visit.
On Wednesday
Pelosi met with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen as part of her high powered meeting
in the island and hailed Taiwan’s democracy which she noted was a “strong
contrast to what’s happening on mainland China,” The Washington Times reported.
Ms. Pelosi
said America’s solidarity with Taiwan would preserve the “one China” policy
which the U.S. continues to respect.
“Our
solidarity with you is more important than ever, as you defend Taiwan and their
freedom,” she said, according to The Washington Times.
China retaliates with cyber-attacks and import restrictions over Pelosi's visit
Her visit
prompted China’s cyber-attacks and import restrictions on a number of goods as
it sought to punish Taiwan for allowing such a high level visit to the island
which it considers part of its territory.
“We’re not
here to talk about mainland China,” she said, The Washington Times reported.
“We’re here to talk about Taiwan.”
Semi-Conductor law would boost U.S. and Taiwan economy - Nancy Pelosi
Pointing to
the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science
Act, Ms. Pelosi said the new law would bring about economic growth in both
Taiwan and the United States.
“This is
something that opens the door for us to, again, have good, better economic
exchanges,” she said. “I know that some Taiwan businesses, significant ones,
are already planning to invest in manufacturing in the United States,”
according to Washington Times.
Will China prevent future visits by U.S. officials?
Ms. Pelosi
said China could not prevent future visits by U.S. officials to the island.
“I just hope
that it’s really clear that while China has stood in the way of Taiwan
participating and going to certain meetings, that they understand that they
will not stand in the way of people coming to Taiwan. It’s a show of
friendship, of support, but also a source of learning about how we can work
together better in collaboration,” she said.
