6000 Arizona voters affected by errors from voter registration

People who register in Arizona to vote or update their registration are subject to driver’s license checks to verify their citizenship so that those without citizenship documentation on file are not eligible to vote in state elections. They are registered as “federal only” voters. In this case, the driver’s license query failed to correctly verify the citizenship for up to 6000 people and hence making them to be improperly registered as federal only voters, said Sophia Solis, spokeswoman for Hobbs.

About 6000 Arizona voters have been significantly affected by errors resulting from voter registration. Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said Tuesday that the affected voters got a mail ballot with only federal races.

The Democratic nominee for governor in the state said the affected voters will receive the correct ballot shortly, The Associated Press reported.

In 2013 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Arizona cannot require documentary proof of citizenship for people to vote in national elections which prompted the state to create two classes of voters which included those who could vote in all races and those who can vote only in federal elections.

Hobbs noted that the database error has been rectified.
