A Connecticut police officer wounded in a gunfight with a shooter, who shot dead two other police officers, fired the shot that killed the suspect. The police in Bristol said in a Facebook post Saturday, Alec Iurato was hit by bullets during an apparent ambush on Wednesday when he returned fire, killing Nicholas Brutcher, The Associated Press reported.
The state
medical examiner’s office reportedly said Brutcher, 35 died from a gunshot
wound to the neck with spinal cord injuries.
Sgt. Dustin
Demonte and Officer Alex Hamzy were killed in a gunfight outside a home where
they had responded to a 911 call about possible domestic violence, according to
The Associated Press. Authorities said the call was intended to lure the police
officers to their death.
About 30
gunshots were heard during the confrontation, witnesses were quoted as saying.
The suspect’s
brother was also hit during the encounter. Iurato was treated and released from
the hospital on Thursday.
35-year-old
Demonte was a 10-year veteran officer and co-recipient of his department’s 2019
Officer of the Year award, according to The Associated Press.
Hamzy, 34
worked eight years for his hometown police force and was an adviser to a police
cadet program.
