Nancy Pelosi says family is ‘heartbroken and traumatized’ after ‘violent’ assault on husband

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says her family is “heartbroken and traumatized” following the “violent” assault on her husband Paul Pelosi at their San Francisco home in the early hours of Friday morning. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says her family is “heartbroken and traumatized” following the “violent” assault on her husband Paul Pelosi at their San Francisco home in the early hours of Friday morning.

In a Dear Colleague letter released on Saturday evening in relation to the brutal attack, the speaker bore her mind about the attack even as her husband now requires surgery for a skull fracture and injuries to his right arm and hands, the Washington Examiner reported.

"Yesterday morning, a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul," Pelosi's Saturday letter reads. "Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop."

"We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving," the letter noted.

The speaker acknowledged the outpouring of prayers and support from her colleagues in Congress and said it would help the recovery process.

"Please know that the outpouring of prayers and warm wishes from so many in the Congress is a comfort to our family and is helping Paul make progress with his recovery. His condition continues to improve," Pelosi's letter stated. "We are also comforted by the words of the Book of Isaiah: 'Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.'"

Paul Pelosi called 911 from the bathroom after David Depape allegedly broke into the family San Francisco home. The suspect asked “Where is Nancy” and sought to restrain Mr. Pelosi as he waited for Nancy.

The suspect reportedly entered the home through a sliding glass door and wielded a hammer.

The attack is believed to have occurred at about 2:27 a.m., according to a tweet by Sgt. Adam Lobsinger of the San Francisco Police Department who said officers were responding to a break in.

Pelosi suffered blunt force trauma to his head and body and was treated for a number of injuries and bruising after the attacker smashed him with a hammer, according to The Associated Press.
