New York will open giant emergency tents on an island Wednesday to serve as temporary shelter for new influx of illegal migrants being bused into the city from southern Border States such as Arizona and Texas.
The
emergency reception center is built on Randall’s Island to serve as temporary
shelter for single, adult men mostly from Venezuela who has been arriving on an
almost daily basis on buses chartered predominantly from Texas, The Associated
Press reported.
The tents
include cots for up to 500 people, laundry facilities, a dining hall and phones
for residents to make international calls.
The city
plans to temporarily resettle the immigrants at the facility once they arrive
at the main Manhattan bus terminal for a couple of days before deciding on next
steps to adopt. But families with children will be housed in a hotel.
“We needed a
different type of operation that gave us the time and space to welcome people,
provide them a warm meal, shower, a place to sleep, to understand their medical
needs, to really then work with them to figure out what their next step is
going to be,” said Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol, according to
The Associated Press.
The facility
also include a space to allow migrants meet case workers to determine their
next steps, as well as a recreational room with televisions, video games and
board games. The sleeping area consists of row upon row of green cots stretch
out, each one with a pillow, some sheets and a blanket.
Texas Gov.
Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey have in the last couple of months bused
illegal migrants arriving the borders states to Democratic run sanctuary cities
in retaliation for President Joe Biden’s disastrous open border policy. The
busing began after the Biden administration announced in April that it was
ending a Trump era freeze on immigration put in place to halt the spread of the
corona virus. Today the city’s housing facilities have become overstretched as
a result of the almost daily arrivals in the city forcing authorizes to erect
the temporary facility to handle yet to arrive aliens.
New York
City’s homeless shelter system is now bursting with more than 63,300 residents
with the number of single men increasing since the spring to 20,000 as of
Monday due to busing scheme, according to The Associated Press.
