Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Sunday lashed out at President Joe Biden’s nuclear “Armageddon” comments describing them as “reckless”.
Pompeo who
advised the president to pursue “quiet diplomacy” was responding to remarks last
week by Mr. Biden who warned about the possibility of Russian President
Vladimir Putin using nuclear weapons to reassert its defeated army.
“Those
comments were reckless,” said Pompeo, who served in the Cabinet of former President
Donald Trump, on “Fox News Sunday,” calling Biden’s statements “a terrible risk
to the American people,” POLITICO reported.
Mr. Putin
whose forces have suffered enormous losses of men, equipment and territory in
the last couple of weeks in its war efforts in Ukraine said Russia would employ
“all available means” to protect its territory, and this includes land recently
seized and annexed by the Kremlin.
“We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy
and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” Biden said Thursday during a fundraiser,
referencing the October 1962 crisis that put the United States and the Soviet
Union on the verge of nuclear war for almost two weeks, according to POLITICO.
Pompeo advocated
for quiet diplomacy in persuading the Russian leader to understand the consequences
of using nuclear weapons against the people of Ukraine.
“I hope that they are doing this quietly,” he
said to host Shannon Bream, according to POLITICO.
Pompeo also
described the recent destruction of the Kerch Bridge connecting Russia with
Crimea as a huge military defeat for Putin and his army in Ukraine.
