David DePape, 42, who brutally attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer last week Friday at the Speaker’s family home in San Francisco, California pleaded not guilty to all state charges brought against him following his Tuesday arraignment.
Mr. DePape
was ordered held without bond during his court appearance.
The suspect
also waived his right to a hearing within 10days at his arraignment at a San
Francisco court room, according to CNN. Judge Diana Northway set Friday,
November 4th for hearing on the matter in San Francisco Superior Court to
decide a date for the preliminary hearing as well as bail setting.
Prosecutors
argued that DePape should be held without bail due to the severe public safety
risks he poses, according to the Washington Examiner.
"There’s
also been a lot of speculation regarding Mr. DePape’s vulnerability to
misinformation, and that’s certainly something we’re going to look into,"
DePape's lawyer, public defender Adam Lipson, told reporters following the
arraignment, according to the Washington Examiner.
The suspect
is believed to have made a number of posts some of which were linked to QAnon
conspiracy theory.
Depape’s
post was sometimes racist while some doubted the integrity of the 2020
presidential elections which President Joe Biden won.
Officers
seized DePape after Paul Pelosi called 911 following the intrusion.
A post on
August 24 with the title “Q,”had a scatological collection of memes that
included photos of the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein with references to
QAnon, the unfounded pro-Trump conspiracy theory that claims the country is run
by a deep state cabal of child sex traffickers, satanic pedophiles and
baby-eating cannibals, according to The Associated Post.
DePape is
facing charges of attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly
weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public
official.
DePape
entered the speaker’s family home after he broke the glass at about 2:27 a.m.,
armed with a hammer and zip ties, the federal complaint revealed. He
immediately restrained Paul Pelosi when he discovered that Nancy Pelosi was not
at home. But Pelosi escaped and called the police after convincing him he
wanted to use the bathroom.
U.S. Capitol
Police said the speaker was in Washington, D.C., with her security details at
the time of the attack, according to The Hill.
Pelosi
suffered blunt force trauma to his head and body and was treated for a number
of injuries and bruising after the attacker smashed him with a hammer,
according to The Associated Press.
