Republican hopes of taking control of the Senate was dashed Saturday following the defeat of Adam Laxalt by his Democratic challenger Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto in a closely fought race in Nevada.

Democrats are expected to maintain control of the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris tie breaking vote irrespective of the outcome of Georgia runoff scheduled for next month

Democrats currently hold 204 seats as against the 211 seats held by Republicans in the House even as vote counting continues in a number of districts in California and a number of other states.

In the Republican Party, the blame game has already started with many staunch supporters of former President Donald Trump turning against him and calling him out for the inability of the GOP to take sweeping control of Congress amid an economy in tatters, inflation and the immigration crisis under the Democrats.

Several candidates endorsed by Trump failed to win elections in several states, giving Democrats the edge to retain control of the Senate.

On Friday Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly defeated Trump endorsed Republican Blake Masters in Arizona Senate race, pushing the Democrats to top spot and putting any sign of a red wave in the dust.

Trump’s support in the Republican Party is weaning following a string of losses which the GOP blames on him.

Counting of votes in Nevada continued for four days after Tuesday’s midterms.
