1 person dead, 8 wounded in shooting incidence at Harlem gathering

No fewer than 8 persons were wounded in a shooting incidence on Monday at a gathering in Harlem, which left a man dead, The Associated Press quoted New York City police to have said.

Officers reportedly responded at about 12:40 a.m. to reports of a shooting on a footpath along the FDR Drive and found five people shot, police said, citing preliminary information, according to The Associated Press.

The wounded were taken to hospital for treatment. Police said a 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital and wounded included six other males and two females.

“This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend where people were supposed to be able to enjoy themselves with their families,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference, according to The Associated Press.

The identity of the shooter has not been released and motives are not clear but the New York Police said it is investigating the incidence, adding that it recovered a gun from the scene.  

Gun violence are down 11% this year in New York City while murders are down 12% but are still at their second-highest level since 2012, according To the Associated Press.
