New York Governor Kathy Hochul is facing Democrats in a crucial election as New Yorkers cast their votes in a governor’s race Tuesday, The Associated Press reports.
Kathy Hochul shot to prominence last year after she replaced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo who resigned over allegations of sexual harassment.
Hochul is
facing off with New York City’s elected public advocate Jumaane Williams, and
U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi from Long Island.
If she is selected,
Hochul will square it up at the general elections with the Republicans who have
not produced a governor in 16 years.
Hochul has
some advantage over her GOP challengers, one she enjoys the incumbency factor
and secondly the recent decision of the Supreme Court to overturn the Roe V
Wade precedent may play in her favor as she has based her campaign on
safeguarding abortion rights. The four Republican candidates contesting to
represent the GOP do not support abortion.
GOP
candidates in the race include U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, and Andrew Giuliani, the
son of New York former mayor, according to The Associated Press.
The election
on Tuesday in New York will cover statewide offices and state Assembly races.
Primary elections for U.S House seats and the state Senate will be held on
August 23, The Associated Press reports.
Hochul has
sought to distance herself from former Governor Andrew Cuomo following his
disgraceful exit over sexual assault allegations in a bid to proof that she is
detached from his policies. But Cuomo has criticized her administration and
Democrats for their approach to crime in Albany
The focus of
her campaign has been on promises she would bolster abortion rights and would
also toughen the state’s gun laws following a racially motivated mass shooting
in Buffalo which left several persons dead.
