Police officers shot a black who was chased after a traffic stop 46 times, Jayland Walker’s autopsy shows.
Police camera footage showed Jayland Walker being killed in heavy gunfire prompting daily protests in the city of Akron.
The medical
examiner said it was impossible to know which bullet killed Jayland Walker or
how many shots were fired in total, BBC reports.
Protesters
have been gathering in the city of Akron following the brutal killing of the
black man on an almost daily basis.
Walker
sustained serious injuries to his heart, lungs and arteries on 27 June when he
was pursued and shot by police officers in the city of Akron.
Authorities
alleged that he fired a single shot 40 seconds into the chase.
The BBC
reported that police body camera footage shows Walker, in a ski mask, jumping
out of the moving vehicle from its passenger side and ducking into a parking
lot were police opened fire on him from multiple directions.
It is
difficult to verify claims by police that he posed a threat to the police
before he was shot. Walker was unarmed at the time.
Police found
an unladed handgun, one clip of ammunition and a wedding band in the driver’s seat
of his vehicle, according to the BBC.
Initial
findings showed more than 60 wounds on Walker's body. Summit County medical
examiner Dr Lisa Kohler said it was "very possible" one bullet may
have caused multiple entrance wounds.
Police
authorities have placed all eight officers involved on paid administration
leave following investigations in Ohio. Seven of the officers are white and one
of them is black.
The local
police union said it believes the officers thought they were at immediate risk
of serious harm and acted to defend themselves in line with their training.
