A former GOP consultant Tara Setmayer said Sunday that Republicans “are scared to death that Donald Trump is going to declare” before the midterm election in November.
Setmayer’s made this known during an interview on MSNBC, after host Jonathan Capehart played remarks Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, made on Fox News Sunday, Newsweek reports.
In his
interview, the senator said he believes the midterms are going to be abut "three
issues: inflation, my kids getting a good education, and I live in a safe
community" and that "Democrats are on the wrong side of those issues,"
according to Newsweek.
Asked how
Trump announcing a presidential campaign before midterms could impact them, he
said "I think it's all going to be about what's happening in your family
right now. People are focused on what happens to them.”
"Come
on Tara," Capehart then said. "If he gets into the race the
conversation's totally going to shift to Donald Trump."
"Let me
translate Republican speak here," Setmayer responded. "It's 'For the
love of God, please do not do this to us. That is what the Republicans are
saying in Washington. They are scared to death that Donald Trump is going to
declare before November because it absolutely changes the conversation for
them."
Setmayey added
that Republicans currently have a "very effective political
environment" following soaring inflation and gas prices and the inability
of the Democratic led White House to deal with worsening cost of living.
"But as soon as Donald Trump declares, Democrats have one singular issue to rally around: 'You do not want this guy and his enablers back in power again,'" Setmayer said. "So, yes Republicans are worried that Donald Trump is going to do this because he doesn't give a damn about the Republican Party or anyone else's electoral prospects, he only cares about himself."
Newsweek
reported that in November 2020, Setmayer announced that she was leaving the Republican
Party, saying in a tweet that she "can no longer associate w/a GOP that's
fully embraced the malignancy of Trumpism.”
Donald Trump had indicated interest he would join the race for the 2024 White House race, saying “I’ve already made that decision”, according to multiple reports.
A similar
report by Politico indicated that Trump has been discussing the timing of his
announcement with “some of his wealthiest and highest profile supporters” at
recent dinners, according to The Washington Examiner.
“Well, in my
own mind, I’ve already made that decision, so nothing factors in anymore. In my
own mind, I’ve already made that decision,” Trump told New York Magazine.
Trump would
most likely announce his decision before or after the midterm elections.
“I would say
my big decision will be whether I go before or after,” he said. “You understand
what that means?”
“I just
think that there are certain assets to before,” Trump said in favor of
announcing his decision before the midterm elections to make him a factor in
the race.
“Let people
know,” he said. “I think a lot of people would not even run if I did that
because, if you look at the polls, they don’t even register. Most of these
people. And I think that you would actually have a backlash against them if
they ran. People want me to run.”
