3 persons are reported dead and one person injured during a lightning strike outside the White House Thursday.
A husband and wife from Wisconsin were celebrating over five decades of marriage when they were hit in the lightning strike near the White House, the Associated Press reports.
By Friday evening,
a third victim was pronounced dead while a woman was hospitalized with
life-threatening injuries, according to The Associated Press.
The couple
travelled to Washington, D.C., to celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary, The
Associated Press quoted their niece, Michelle McNett of Janesville.
“They were a very loving couple,” McNett told
the Wisconsin State Journal. “They were very, very family oriented. I think
everyone’s just in shock right now and kind of request privacy.”
The couple
was survived by five children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Officers
from the Secret Service and the U.S. Park Police rendered first aid after the
lightning strike while emergency medical crews were called to the scene just
before 7 p.m.
