A number of music stars including Metallica, Mariah Carey and the Jonas Brothers will feature in a concert in New York Central Park in September in an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Global Citizen Festival organized by the international nonprofit fighting extreme poverty, The Associated Press reports.

The September 24 event will also feature similar concerts around the world in places such as Accra, Ghana featuring User, SZA and H.E.R.

Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said in a statement that the event would not just be a celebration but a call to action to immediately address numerous international crises.

“We are actually at one critical inflection point where COVID has pushed nearly 100 million people into extreme poverty and now Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has made the situation so much worse,” he said, according to The Associated Press. “As many as 323 million people are now facing acute hunger. And if we don’t take urgent action now, as many as 200 million more people are likely to be plunged into extreme poverty by November, bringing the total number of people living in extreme poverty to over a billion people again.”

What would Global Citizen achieve with NYC music concert?

Global Citizen said it would use the celebration to encourage fans to seek more action from government in fighting hunger and poverty.

The group wants the United States to donate $500 million in grants to farmers in Africa to enable them grow more crops instead of relying heavily on grain and fertilizer from Ukraine and Russia locked up in bitter territorial battles.

“We also need to address the reality that supporting women and girls around the world and their talents are the closest we have to a silver bullet for the eradication of poverty,” Evans said, according to The Associated Press. “We’re calling on the wealthiest nations to provide $600 million dollars in critical investments into education, sexual and reproductive health and economic empowerment for them.”

Global Citizen claims it has targeted more than 1.15 billion people in its $41.4 billion campaign towards fighting poverty and extreme hunger around the world since its first festival in 2012.
