A total of nine persons were injured in a mass shooting incident outside a Cincinnati bar in the early hours of Sunday.

The shooting took place shortly after 1:30 a.m. outside Mr. Pitiful’s bar in the Ohio city’s Over-the-Rhine district, a popular nightlife area, The Associated Press reports. Lt. Col. Mike John of the Cincinnati police told reporters that most of the victims suffered wounds to their lower halves.

John said at a Sunday news conference that eight men and one woman between the ages of 23 and 47 were wounded during the shooting, according to The Associated Press. The victims were treated at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and had been released, The Associated Press quoted hospital spokesperson Heather Chura as telling The (Cincinnati) Enquirer.

The suspect fled the scene but the police fired a shot at him and another shot was fired after he fled indicating that there were two persons shooting at the scene.

“What I can tell you is that the individual that he fired at was actively shooting a firearm at that time,” John said. The suspect fled the scene. He said he believed there was “no question” that the officer’s immediate response saved lives.

Authorities are saying that a fight broke out between two groups, and police saw at least two people involved, brandish weapons and shoot at each other, The Enquirer reported.
