A top FBI agent has reportedly resigned from the agency’s Washington field office over political bias related to undermining the probe of Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Timothy
Thibault, who served as an assistant special agent in charge, was forced to
resign from his position, two former FBI officials familiar with the situation
told The Washington Times.
Mr. Thibault
was seen leaving the bureau’s elevator last Friday escorted by two or more “headquarters-looking
types,” The Washington Times cited eyewitness accounts provided to one of the
former officials.
The condition
of Mr. Thibault’s departure from the bureau is unclear but the 25-year FBI
veteran was on leave for at least a month following revelations about political
statements he made while leading the public corruption unit, according to The
Washington Times.
Mr. Thibault
came under Republican lawmakers scrutiny after he make anti-Trump statements in
social media posts in 2020 when he led the FBI’s investigation of Hunter Biden
whose father President Biden was on the campaign trail running for the top
White House job.
According to
The Washington Times, in February and September of 2020, Mr. Thibault liked separate
Washington Post opinion pieces critical of Attorney General William Barr for
not prosecuting Mr. Trump’s political allies and close relatives more
aggressively.
Mr. Thibault
also retweeted a post by the Republican anti-Trump group Lincoln Protect that
called Mr. Trump “a psychologically broken, embittered and deeply unhappy man.”
Mr. Thibault
is also accused of pushing out unvaccinated agents from the FBI’s election squad
that he suspected were Trump supporters, The Washington Times quoted the former
official.
One of the
former officials was placed on indefinite suspension last year by the bureau
because he attended the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington on January 6,
2021, a day before a riotous mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a
bid to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. The official
is now a whistleblower talking to the House Judiciary Committee.
Following
his resignation last year, the official said other FBI officials were “purged”
for attending the rally on their own time and not on official FBI business,
according to The Washington Times.
“Look, I
think some of the executives that were involved in my indefinite suspension are
the same cast of characters involved in pulling security clearances for
conservative employees in retaliation for their disfavored political speech,”
he said.
Hunter Biden has been facing investigations into his foreign business dealings including violations of foreign lobbying laws and money laundering.
