President Joe Biden said voters have “legitimate” concerns about his age and whether someone of his age could cope with the demands of the White House role as he turns 80 on November 20.
Mr. Biden
noted that he is physically and mentally fit to handle the daily tasks of the
president of the United States as well as to seek a second term in office when
he would be 82 by 2025 on inauguration day if he wins.
The president
was responding to a question about his age during an MSNBC interview aired Sunday
on the network.
Mr. Biden
has suffered low approval ratings as the country struggles with soaring inflation,
increased mortgages and high interest rates.
Mr. Biden
may likely square it up with former President Donald Trump who said last week
he would run for the 2024 race. Mr. Trump is a top contender among Republicans
although there are other people including former Vice President Mike Pence and
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who are likely candidates under the GOP.
Trump is leading
President Joe Biden by 1 point in a New York Times poll among potential voters.
Mr. Trump leads Biden, 45 to 44 percent, when registered voters were asked who
they would support if the 2024 presidential election were held today, according
to a New York Times College poll published Monday.
Biden also
leads Trump in a number of other polls including a Yahoo News-YouGov poll last
month that had Biden leading Trump by 6 point, according to The Hill.
Although Mr.
Biden is yet to announce officially he would be seeking re-election, he has
nonetheless said he would be seeking a second term.
The New York
Times Siena College poll shows abysmally low approval ratings for Biden and was
conduction among 792 registered voters between October 9 and October 12.
Only 39
percent of potential voters approve of how Biden is handling his job even as
the president continues to battle with his disastrous open border policy and
troubling inflation now at a 40-year high.
43 percent
of likely voters have a favorable opinion of Trump but 52 percent have an
unfavorable opinion.
A recent
Associated Press NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll shows only 3 in
10 people questioned want eitherTrump or Biden to run for president in 2024.
While 5 in 10 Democrats want Biden to seek reelection in the 2024 elections, 6
in 10 Republicans want Trump to take a shot at the president once again.
Biden wants
to be judged on the basis of his capability and endurance rather than age
considerations.
“I think the
best way to make the judgement is to watch me. Am I slowing up? Am I going at
the same pace?” Biden said in the interview that was taped Friday during a
visit to the Delaware State University campus to promote his student loan debt
forgiveness executive order, according to The Associated Press.
