Republican state Assemblyman Mike Lawler defeated the head of House Democrats’ campaign committee, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in Tuesday’s midterm elections to represent New York’s 17th Congressional District

The stunning defeat is a major to the Democrat Party especially as it involves a man who has worked hard to ensure the victory of Democrats in elections.

Maloney currently represents New York’s 18th Congressional District even though he chose to run for the newly created 17th Congressional District.

Mr. Maloney accepted defeated immediately after his defeat. A spokesperson for Lawler’s campaign, William F.B.O’Reilly posted on Twitter that Maloney “just called to graciously concede to @lawler4ny,” according to The Hill.

Before Tuesday's midterms Democrats held 220 seats while the Republicans held 212.

Democrats currently hold 185 seats in the House as against the 208 held by the Republicans who are clearly in a lead. But the GOP will need about 218 seats to hold a clear majority.

In the Senate, we have 48 Democrats while the GOP hold 49.
