New York Mets have reportedly reached a new $102 million deal with baseball star Edwin Diaz, just a day after the World Series ended. The contract which includes a team option for 2028 is the largest ever for a reliever, New York Daily News reported.
The new five-year contract includes a full no-trade clause for the star player who has
recorded 32 saves as well as struck 118 batters out of 235 he confronted,
according to New York Daily News.
The team
option would make the contract six years, $122 million for the star closer who
was the best in the season.
Diaz, who
will be 29 in March had a 1.31 ERA (0.90 FIP) and 0.83 WHIP when he struck out
118 batters in 62 innings, according to Yahoo Sports.
Diaz was in
the 100th percentile in 2022 in relation to xBA strikeout rate, xSLG,
xERA/xwOBA, and whiff rate, according to Yahoo Sports.
He was also
in the 99th percentile in fastball velocity, the 97th percentile in chase rate,
the 96th percentile in average exit velocity, and the 93rd percentile in barrel
percentage.
The baseball star also received Cy Young votes as well as some MVP votes for his sterling performance in the season.
