A 10-year-old girl has been denied abortion in the U.S. state of Ohio following a recent Supreme Court ruling which overturned the historic Roe v Wade precedent which gave American women of reproductive age unprecedented access to abortion.
A child
abuse doctor in Ohio contacted Dr. Caitlin Bernard who is an
obstetrician-gynecologist in Indiana, after receiving a 10-year-old patient who
was six weeks and three days pregnant, The Hill cited a report by the Indianapolis
Star.
Following
the Supreme Court ruling, a state law in Ohio was immediately triggered effectively
banning abortion. The law prohibits abortion when fetal cardiac activity
begins, around six weeks.
The state law
which took effect Wednesday has been challenged by a number of groups at the
Ohio Supreme Court. The court rejected an emergency stay of the abortion ban on
Friday which effectively upholds the ban as the case is reviewed, The Hill
cited a report by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The child
patient may be heading to Indiana to access the procedure but the state may
soon pass its own law banning the procedure following a planned special session
in July by the state legislature, The Hill cited a report by WFYI.
