Music icon Jerry Lee Lewis was laid to rest as a crowd of about 100 people gathered Saturday to say adieu to the rock ‘n’ roll legend.
The funeral
ceremony which held at his north Louisiana home town of Ferriday was attended
by family and friends as well as fans, The Associated Press reported.
Mr. Lewis
died at the age of 87 on October 28 at his Mississippi home in Memphis,
Tennessee.
Lewis made a
number of recordings but was reputed for hits such as “Great Balls of Fire” and
“Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
A pioneer of
rock ‘n’ roll, Lewis’ legendary skills shaped the music industry along with
other talented singers such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry.
His body was
placed inside a closed red casket and laid at the front of the main parlor of
the funeral home. Some funeral wreaths were placed around the casket including
one in the form of a musical note which appears to show him dressed in a red
suit and singing with a microphone.
Lewis got
into trouble in the late 1950s when news of his marriage to his 13-year-old
cousin, Myra Gale Brown filtered in, at the time he was still married to his
previous wife. He and rock rebel was blacklisted from radio making it
impossible for him to make earnings.
Although he
struggled with drugs and alcohol after his marital crises, Lewis appeared to
spring back into the industry in the 1960s with top 10 country hits from 1967
to 1970, including “What’s Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me),
and “She Still Comes Around,” according to The Associated Press.
Lewis was
inducted into the Country Hall of Fame in 2022 having attended the inaugural
class of inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
He won a
Grammy in 1987 after his album was nominated for best spoken word recording and
was awarded with a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2005.
