Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott Tuesday won reelection defeating his Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke as voting closed in a number of states in what appears to be a red wave.
Mr. Abbott
is considered a front runner for the 2024 presidential elections and Tuesday’s
midterm victory for the governor makes his chances for the White House bid ever
stronger. He is yet to announce whether or not he intends to run.
Mr. Abbott
began busing illegal immigrants in April following the decision of President
Joe Biden to end the Trump era ban on immigration through the U.S.-Mexican
border as a way of halting the spread of corona virus into the country.
Most of
those bused were sent to Democratic sanctuary cities in a bid to draw attention
to the immigration crisis at the border.
According to
a Dallas Morning News-University of Texas, Tyler, poll conducted in September,
54% of those polled said they approve of Abbott’s busing of migrants to
Washington, D.C., while 52% said they approved of the way Abbott has handled
the border crisis.
His opponent
O’Rourke blamed the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, Uvalde on the state’s
gun laws. 19 students and two of their teachers were killed in the incident.
That was not
enough to give the Democrats the victory they so sought.
